Furbearer Hunting at Atterbury-Muscatatuck

Currently Atterbury-Muscatatuck allows furbearer hunting for coyotes, fox, skunk, opossum, beaver, mink, muskrat, long-tailed weasel, and raccoon during the legal hunting seasons. The taking of furbearer species helps promote a healthier ecosystem by keeping predator populations in check and allowing less pressure on prey species populations. The hunting of certain furbearers like beaver and raccoon can also help control populations and avoid potential human-animal conflicts.

 

2025/2026 Season Harvest Recap

During the 2025/2026 season, a total of 24 furbearers were harvested via hunting at Camp Atterbury. The chart to the right shows the number of furbearers harvested by species and their percentage of the total harvest.

 

Nighttime Hunting

Night hunting for furbearers is allowed on the installation, but does require hunters to coordinate with Range Control prior to their hunt. Hunters looking to harvest furbearers may not check-in before 06:00 and must be checked out no later than 23:59. 

 

Bobcat Hunting

Bobcat season runs from Nov. 8, 2026 - Jan. 31, 2027, or until the season quota is met. There is a season quota of 400 bobcats for the 2026-2027 season. There is a bag limit of one bobcat per person per season. Bobcat hunting and trapping is allowed in all three counties that comprise Camp Atterbury (Johnson, Brown, and Bartholomew). All bobcats taken during the season must be registered with the DNR.
